Painted Lady Butterflies Love Kale

I let my kale go to flower this year.  The leaves are still delicious and the bumble bees and butterflies love it.  The kale hadn’t been harmed at all by the mild winter and has provided us with fresh green vegetable dishes all season long.  Today I went out to pick some leaves for the fresh kale salad I posted about a couple of months ago and found one Red Admiral  and three Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa virginiensis) on one plant, along with several bumbles.  The Red Admirals are reported to be very numerous right now, apparently due to them having two “outbreaks” this year; one from wintering over butterflies and the second, which is occurring now, from migrants coming north.  I may wait just a little longer before I pull out that kale.
