Purple Fish Chowder

This photo doesn't capture its "purpleness" but the color didn't affect the yummy flavor.

What happens when you use your purple potatoes and your purple onions to make chowder?  It turns purple.  We harvested the remaining volunteer potatoes and I have lots of purple onions (see yesterday’s post) and the store had chowder pieces of fish on sale.  The trick to great chowder is the broth.  When I make corn chowder, I boil the cobs and use that water instead of simple tap water.  For clam or fish chowder, bottled clam juice enhances the flavor.  Try this with your favorite chowder recipe next time.  The purple fish chowder tasted wonderful, it just looked a little funny.

I haven't planted potatoes for eight years, but they keep coming.

I haven’t planted potatoes for eight years, but they keep coming. The blue ones must be dominant as they are the only variety we have still yielding each year.
